homeward bound 2: lost in... somewhere other than san francisco
So, remember that experimental technology the Initiative is working on, with the goal of sending people home? Well, it worked just as hoped... at first.
Tomorrow, on the 21st, the Initiative will reopen the window to check on Elmer to see if there are any longer-term effects of their technological meddling. They’ll discover that the entire world has been ravaged irrecoverably and is at the tail end of losing a surprise war.
Three days after the Initiative and their volunteers left, the UE opened multiple gateways across different access points of the planet, waging full out guerrilla style warfare. Using their ability to pinpoint one place in time, they systematically hit key points of interest one after another, leaving little time for coordinated response. The world and all of its government centers and financial districts are falling or have already been destroyed.
The Initiative will immediately sound the alarm, calling all willing and capable fighters to defend Elmer’s home world. However, this is a battle they’re destined to lose. Against the strength of the UE amassed forces, even the strongest fighters among the Transports won’t stand a chance.
Note: if you’d like your character to die during this plot, as is likely without a quick escape plan, the Initiative will resurrect them again almost immediately. Characters will wake up in the Hold’s labs only half an hour after being killed, feeling weak and sore but whole. Feel free to make use of this at will.
Elmer’s world will be lost. After 6 hours of fighting, the Initiative will call a retreat and seal shut the gateway. Additionally, the interference of the UE will cause the Initiative's technology to balk upon any further attempted connections. The transport pads will be unable to interface with Elmer’s world past his current canonpoint of 2002. This includes pulling any more people from Elmer’s world past the point in time of the attack; the future of that world has been stolen away.
But how, you ask, did the UE know anything about this technology? How did they find Elmer's world? That’s what the Initiative is looking into, too. Two hours after the discovery of the UE’s surprise attack, they’ll intercept a broadcasting signal — a spy. The source will be traced to Adam Jensen, one of the Transports chosen to recover Clive from his mission into UE territory. Recognizing a cyborg, the UE had injected him with nanobots, which have been broadcasting everything he sees and does back to the UE — including his trip into Elmer’s world. As soon as he’s apprehended and taken into the Hold, the nanobots will scramble Adam’s connection to the Transporter and detonate themselves to escape study, taking Adam (and anything within a 10 foot radius) with them. A minor explosion will shake the foundations of the hold 2.5 hours after the UE attack is discovered, and unfortunately, due to the scrambling by the nanobots, Initiative technology will be unable to revive Adam.
At the end of the day, the losses total to one Transport, unable to be resurrected; Elmer’s entire world; and the Initiative’s present hopes of sending people home. With the UE latched onto this new transporter signal, any world they attempt to connect to will be immediately flagged and attacked.
None of these losses have to be permanent. With enough research, and enough jumping around in Exsilium's own world history, they’ll be able to prevent that attack and save the lost world from its untimely demise.
Or at least, that’s what the Initiative hopes.
A log for the losing battle in Elmer’s world will go up tomorrow! There are no sign ups necessary for this trip. Again, if you’d like your character to die in this battle, that’s perfectly fine! They’ll be back again in 30 minutes. As an OOC note — as of May 21st, 2013 and until further notice, no Baccano characters from a canonpoint of post 2002 will be able to be apped into Exsilium.
Questions and comments can be directed to the thread for them on this entry! Otherwise, feel free to do any plotting here.
