(re)construction plotting, signups and FAQ post, the followup adventures

Hello Exsilium and (belated) Happy 2014! As a followup to some of the stuff discussed in the previous plotting post:

This January, Chrysos will be pulling (or attempting to pull) together a large-scale collaborative effort to build proper base facilities on the ground in Exsilium. This is gonna require supplies! Manpower! Teamwork! Expertise! Character interaction! Caribou! Yaks!

If any of these things sound relevant to your characters' interests or yours, details under the cut:

1) Building what whuh wat wut?

Simply put, making a kind of open-access Transport HQ (or HQs, plural) down on planetside! Hopefully complete with some of the kinds of things the former Hold (and the Moonbase) used to provide: spaces for accommodation (with heat and light and plumbing, equipment housing, storage, workshops, labs, an indoor farm or two, stables/kennels, clinic, etc etc etc.

2) How is this going down?

There'll be a network post calling for help wanted on around Jan 7, followed by a log post of actual action shenanigans (various scenarios) on Jan 9 or 10, though the events played out on and offscreen are obviously free to take place anytime during IC January.

3) Wherefore are thou doing so?

Because at the present time the Transports are kind of scattered all over Snowsilium in little pockets of individual residence (of varying livability) and it would be helpful to have some kind of centralized location to actually organize business in as a faction, whether it comes to plans for checking out the UE, for getting newcomers set up, to hole up in in case Shit Goes Down, to actually have expensive futurequipment conveniently situated so people can get to their doctorly/sciencely/techly/various affairs, etc etc etc.

Also it seems like it might be a good idea to at least have the Transporter housed in a vaguely livable and defensible place given it's their key piece of equipment that the UE doesn't have, just saying

4) Where is building happening?

Four (potential) locations! The point was brought up that putting everything in one location might be a bad idea in case bombing happens again, so it's likely more than one of these (or all of them) will have something set up. Depends on what the Transports feel about it, too!

- The building currently holding the Transporter, a New Initiative-loaned facility which has a bare-bones setup and houses the Old Initiative NPCs. (Not sure if this is above or belowground, I'm assuming the latter at the moment!) May need New Initiative approval to actually ICly go forward on this front any DITR/NPC/others able to negotiate interested?

- An underground set of warehouses in the city area, close to the Thames ice highway, procured from the locals. Pretty run-down, but the walls are sturdy as heck! Connected by tunnel network to other parts of the central district.

- An underground former museum/aboveground hotel on the outskirts of the central city-state area. Has some funky internal decor, but it has its own small geothermal power facility (refurbished) keeping things running. Distant enough from town to be discreet.

- An old castle/fort in the highlands, close to what used to be the borderlands of former Exsilium. Safe and sound fortress material, but pretty far away from just about everything. Might be a good spot for the non-humans to make a discreet home in.

5) My character isn't an engineer/scientist/strongman/architect/etc., can they still get involved?

Yes, definitely! Even on the construction front, there's always a use for anyone who can pick up a hammer or a brick or a shovel or a broom; on other fronts, there's running supply sleighs, running protection for said supplies from raiders and yetis, doing side jobs to help pay for things, feeding people, talking and negotiating with locals, or just overall sticking one's nose in anywhere. Anything you or your character can think of to engage in this situation!

EDIT: Not-exhaustive of potential Things To Do:

- clean up rubbish from the sites
- cut wood or stone and lay bricks or pipes or wires and stuff
- plan where those bricks or pipes or wires or stuff go
- heavy lifting
- light lifting
- bend metal
- punch trees down
- discreetly negotiate help from locals
- get hands on power tools/medical equipment/generators/mechanielectrical gear that may be hard to get
- get money
- punch raiding yetis before they ruin the day
- punch raiding anything before they ruin the day
- watch out for spies!!!
- drive supply vehicles (sleighs/iceboats/etc)
- feed the sled dogs and other pack animals
- capture more pack animals maybe
- feed people
- maybe with cookies
- morale is important

6) Can my character get involved in more than one of the things? Can they do ALL THE THINGS?

Sure! (If your character would be the type/is capable.) Feel free to assume that Chrys has them on a slightly complicated but tightly arranged roster for different shift duties on different jobs, or something like that. It's gonna be a long at-least-a-month.

7) How does resources for building things?

That's partly where characters come in! Chrys and others have managed to get in contact with some local merchants and the like to get essential building and technical supplies in, but that takes payment, and doesn't account for everything that might be needed, either (like really specialized tech, which is something that might be better procured either from the moonbase's stuff or from missions). So whether it's doing odd jobs in exchange for the goods, or arranging some financial shenanigans in the past for money, how fancy they can make the place will depend partly on how much they can get.

There's also always using one's superpowers or weapons of choice to cut down a tree or six for lumber, of course. Or rip chunks of granite out of the hills.

8) How long will this work take?

Depends on how much help it gets! I'd say a safe bet would be "some decent semblance of a base/Hold before the end of January", if the current crew throw themselves into it.

9) but why caribou/yaks tho

Because no one has a truck in Snowsilium.

And you've gotta move those pipes somehow.

Questions, signups, ideas, comments, throw 'em all here! Lemme know if I left anything essential out, I'll update this main post as things move along.

Signing up Carol for this! She's not very strong or much of an architect, but she can be used for smaller jobs like carrying things and cleaning.

Kevin | Food | Math | Well-Meaning Sabotage

[personal profile] senseandcecilbility 2014-01-06 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Kevin will be surprised to find out that the pervert plumber does more than plumbing and fixing heaters! That said, he will be happy to bring food and refreshments. Hopefully, the technicians won't mind a random butler looking over their shoulders and providing the result of a mathematical equation now and then.

Oh, and if they by any chance choose an inadequate ground to build on, Kevin will let them know in a very smooth and delicate way. They might find mammoth crystals stopping the progress of their machinery or something like that. Oops.

Ico | A lot

[personal profile] hornedomen 2014-01-06 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ico is good at doing various tasks like cleaning, heavy lifting, simple construction and simpler wiring. He also has experience with riding horses so a yak / caribou are like the same thing, right? Well, it could help anyway.

Signing uppp— a lot of people.

Mikoto Suoh, Misaki Yata, and Eric Soult will be punching yetis. Totsuka Tatara and Kougoyku Ren would be feeding people and pets (with Kougyoku also fighting yetis on the side?!). Meanwhile Izumo Kusanagi will be discreetly do negotiations with the locals!

Asbel lacks any of those spiffy titles, but he can handle menial and manual labor of assorted kinds that don't require super strength or a ton of know-how. You know, laying bricks, hammering, medium(?) lifting, cleaning up and clearing out.

He's also willing to try his hand at negotiating with locals, providing protection against raiders, feeding animals, and/or throwing morale-boosting speeches around. Basically whatever there's a shortage of, and whatever's most needed at the time. He's not picky, he just wants to help.

I mean, Tony can help with like. Basically whatever - he does a lot of coordination and building and networking and shit at home, so whether something needs a quick alteration or something heavy needs to be moved or someone has to jump in and push, he's pretty good for it.

And Larry can help.. feed people. And morale! Or talking to the natives.

Re: SIGNUPS

[personal profile] maddeninghatter 2014-01-06 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe various denizens of the creepy castle will be at the Transport Log with baked goods and information about the castle - basically, you get a place to stay in exchange for renovation work. I had the idea of opening the museum part of it to the general (local) public, as a means of generating income. That means there would be a need for people who can clean and restore the art, work in the museum, or even create new works of art.

Making it into a proper base, with defense capabilities would have to be done clandestinely. However since most of the museum is underground, it's a fairly good bomb shelter. It might also be a place to protect locals, as Transports have a bad habit of visiting destruction upon Exsilium, oops.

Kang

Former engineer in the medieval sense (siege engines, wood and stone fortifications, bridges, that sort of thing), so he knows how to plan, design and build things low-tech. He's also got more modern knowledge on construction and machines, and anything having to do with it he doesn't know yet, he's a very fast learner. He does know a bit about electrical wiring, as well.

He'll help out with just about anything that he's capable of! He's stronger than the average human (but not incredibly so), an excellent fighter (with blades, early 21st century firearms and other military weaponry, and magic), and a sorceror, so he can do heavy lifting, defense, and use magic to blast rock from mountainsides (he's done it before).

His Weapon is also his Voice, which means his already high diplomacy is even higher. That can definitely come in handy with getting supplies and dealing with locals.

Johnny doesn't know how to build shit, but he's willing to learn. The good news is, he's super strong, so he'll be great for helping move the heavy stuff.

Elmer also doesn't know how to build shit, and he isn't super strong, but he's got lots of moxie and that accounts for something?????

Celena

[personal profile] curiousredsoul 2014-01-07 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Celena is quite experienced and skilled with technical designs be it for buildings or devices. In her previous game she headed up the infrastructure subdepartment of the engineering department while onboard. Developing and construction of defensive shelters among other things.

She would be more than happy to lend her assistance in the planning and design side of things as well as providing interactive holographic blueprints that can easily be changed on the fly to give those working a good idea on what needs to be done. As a dragon she also has a great measure of strength and magical ability so can help with the heavy lifting where needed!

[personal profile] biwinning 2014-01-08 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sollux miiight wind up just arbitrarily helping here. He's got psionic powers, so lifting a bunch of heavy shit and transporting it from place to place is no more strenuous than a daily work out routine. The problem might be... if anyone actually bothers talking to him. Because one wrong word and he'll pitch a mood-fit and leave. SO THERE'S THAT.

Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle

[personal profile] khajidont 2014-01-08 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
...and yes, I mean to list both, because what ID he ends up coming as depends on what is actually needed! He is by no means an engineer, but he can handle tools and follow directions sufficiently, which is something he'd be more than happy to do in his civilian ID, which is what he really prefers.

However, if a lot of raw, heavy material needs to be transported or even flown, he'll come in uniform because he can use the suit to carry stupid amounts of weight (though not as much as Raiden, good for you cyborg bro). He can also replicate some more heavier duty tools, but will need a lot of guidance as to what to do with them! (And don't ask me why he decided to don a hardhat in his indestructible suit in that panel bc I do not know.)

[personal profile] promises_to_keep 2014-01-08 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
no, seriously, he's a walking space heater and can shoot fireballs no worries. so if you guys run short on fuel for the heaters, you just give a holla. he's not so much into heavy lifting, but he's very weak to puppy eyes.

Luke has a little experience because he was fixing up a restaurant before everything went to hell with a handbasket. At the very least, he's decent with a hammer and nails. He can use measuring tape! Apply spackle! Wow!!!!!!!

He's also ridiculously strong by now (RPG physics and several months of missions in Exsilium) so he can lift a lot of stuff. Maybe not like a building but someone's gotta haul that wood and stuff.
