in canon max basically runs a bunch of shelters for ladies and baby queers so this is her Thing

she just has a lot of feelings okay

i'm not sure if nico would ever open up to max but when she's around kids/teenagers she comes across pretty friendly and caring

it's really hard to say at this point because literally the only thing that got him to come out in canon was being cornered by the god cupid and attacked relentlessly until he admitted his feelings

and the one person who was present as a witness has been super supportive but still can't get nico to so much as acknowledge what happened, let alone address it

he's kind of a mess

Steph might be better w/ Nico since she's a lot more open about liking girls/having dated a girl even tho she's in a relationship with a dude right now. So at least Nico could potentially find our she's queer too.

Yeah, that's definitely more what he needs right now. Which is not to say - and I keep on stressing this with Nico, because it's really important for me with his characterization - that his queerness is the central issue with his character or that coming to terms with it will fix all his problems, because it won't. I think it all ties back to his fatal flaw, and his mental dissonance between the person he actually is and the person he wishes he was (that person being an amalgamation of a lot of traditional heroic character tropes he grew up on, a la.......Percy Jackson).

But one of the things that's so striking for me is how alone he is in canon - not just as a son of Hades but also as a queer kid, since he's the first queer main character we've seen in Riordan's works. He has allies but he has no actual queer support structure, and because loneliness is a huge factor in his self-image issues, I think having that queer support, those queer role models will help him come to terms with at least one part of the issue, and that might give him strength to start tackling the others

Which - if Steph is open about her identity as Batgirl in Exsilium, that'll be double amazing because he remembers Batman as a new, exciting thing, and Steph is a hero, and also queer.

omg don't apologize that all makes a lot of sense and now i'm having too many feelings about nico

i definitely agree that while it won't solve all his problems instantly, having one less thing that he's all tangled up about will probably make it easier for him to start dealing with other stuff

and yyy steph is open about being batgirl! she's appeared on the network as both and occasionally introduces herself as steph/batgirl so i am sure nico can pick up on it easily enough. wrt fourth walling i'm okay with people recognizing the batsymbol and knowing that batman/gotham/etc is a thing, but I'd rather people not know secret ids or mention to steph that they're fictional. comics of batman and co. do exist in the dc verse but steph would kind of freak out if some stranger knew heaps about the batfam, so yeah.
