player plot: runeblades gone wild

HELLO FRIENDS lyn here, player of elves and dragons. This particular elf has been in the game for a year this month, woo. In celebration (??) of that fact, I thought I'd go ahead and go forward with a player plot I've been thinking on for about that long.

So, for those of you unfamiliar with the Warcrafts, Koltira is a death knight. An undead, unholy abomination of ice and steel etc. One of the most prudent facts of being a death knight is that you've got to have a runeblade (or two). Koltira's is this big guy called Byfrost, and it's been evolving over the past year. Evolving a lot.

In terms of the weapon itself, this means that its blade has become keener and the disease inducing/blood bursting spells it generates are significantly more difficult to cleanse / resist at all. It's also become very lightweight in Koltira's hands, despite being enormous. These are good things, ostensibly.

But the thing is: runeblades, especially a runeblade like Koltira's, are inherently evil. They have a low grade sentience and that sentience is mostly directed towards lots and lots of murder. This is because death knights are a mix of necromantic and demonic magic--as are their weapons. Some months ago, Byfrost acquired a thin, black miasma around its blade. This miasma has been thickening and thickening, and now it's started to actively leak.

What does that mean for you?

Well, the leakages are forming into shadow demons, and these little guys are slowly proliferating throughout Exsilium. Their primary goal in existence is to torment the shit out of Koltira, but they are not adverse to tormenting other people, too. Their population is concentrated around him, but they are also likely to be found lurking in dark alleys, in pools of shadow just beyond streetlights, or in that one corner of the closet with all the laundry you still haven't done.

they look like this.

How do they affect the populace?

They don't, if you don't want them to. Like I said, their goal is to haunt Koltira, and it's fine to say that you never encounter them (particularly if you never spend any time near dead elf guy).

But if you do encounter them, they will mostly whisper unpleasant nothings in your ear. Their negative energy will augment whatever bad feelings you've already got in your gut, making them worse. Making you hostile; perhaps violent. A great thing, given the current Transport-native relations, eh?

They won't physically harm your character, and if your guy is the kind to just shrug off something hissing in their ear about being a worthless fuckup with no soul to save, then it's no worries in any case.

However, they also cannot be physically harmed by your character. At least not in this world.

So what do we do!

The demons exist on a shadowy plane--to which Koltira has access. So a few people will need to go there and kill them! But first Koltira has to realize it's happening--and has to be convinced that it's worth doing something about. He is not the type to readily share his problems with others, and he's been through the wringer with these demon-things before. IT'S HIS PROBLEM. HE'LL DEAL WITH IT. Except it's not, and he shouldn't.

Starting on the 9th, the shadow demon population will steadily increase, until--by the third day--it will become impossible to ignore. At that point, Koltira will be forced to ask for help (provided no one has yelled at him to do this yet anyway). If you want to help, there's no special requirement: Koltira can send anyone to shadow realm. He just can't go there himself.

Okay, and what about after the demons are gone?

Well, Byfrost's evolution can't be reversed, and the sword itself can't be destroyed--or Koltira will be destroyed with it. He needs it to survive. But, in order to prevent a repeat of this situation, his chip will have to be either deactivated or busted up beyond use, so as to prevent further evolution.

What's the timeline here, again?

Byfrost has been actively leaking miasma since the start of the month, but the shadow demons will make themselves increasingly known from Tuesday the 9th and onward, growing in population and ferocity. Koltira will ask for help on Saturday the 13th, and if he gets a little assist, they can be cleared out by the 14th.

TL;DR in sum: Byfrost is leaking demon-beasts that are here to torment Koltira and aggravate the general population. If you have no interest in this plot, the demons can be handily ignored / resisted. If you have interest, then the demons can explode tensions between your character/other characters/natives/etc. And he'll need some people to kill them, too.
