my guess is that basically they're helping him with monitoring the progress of his condition, probably medication of some kind to try to stop the secondary damage & then physical therapy and stuff to hopefully help keep him breathing. i got the impression it was less extensive stuff and more monitoring and an attempt to keep it as much in check as is possible. and I think most stuff could be pretty well handwaved!
also yes i have decided for him getting sick we could either backdate something or do something with him once he's in the hospital? whichever you'd prefer!
